The thing about photography is that it’s not a mindset you can switch off simply by not practicing it, in order to focus on more pressing tasks like writing college essays and studying for the SATS and A2. It’s not even about being good at it, it’s about simply doing it, manifesting the abstract with your own bare hands. There’s really nothing tangible to switch off; it’s just floating ideas in your restless mind, sometimes in the back and sometimes consuming, but it’s always there. It’s almost indistinguishable from being conscious. To be awake is to think, and have the mind welcome to ideas. In a way it’s really nice, like having background music (the good kind) on all the time, but sometimes you need silence to be able to do other, proper things.
