Did I tell you about the time we found a merman on the shore?
We took him home.
It was a mistake.
I admit, it was selfish of us.
We were too curious and he was too fascinating, even though he never spoke a word.
But we knew he was sad because he shed seashells.
When he felt homesick we put him in the bathtub.
Eventually he stopped shedding seashells.
They became part of him instead.
One day we took him swimming.
And when he was in the water
he was happier than we’ve ever seen him.
There was only one thing to do.
We let him go.
We never saw him again.
But we still have his seashells.
